How do I prevent a leak in my property?

Cold weather is one of the main reasons why your plumbing may become damaged. When water freezes it expands and can lead to pipes cracking or splitting. Prevention is better than cure, and there are several measures to help prevent leakage, especially in cold weather:

  • ensure all pipes in cold and enclosed areas are insulated properly and keep your outside taps wrapped up if they aren’t insulated.
  • check all the outlets in your home for drips and puddles, if you locate a leak, make repairs immediately to prevent further damage.
  • have your boiler serviced regularly if not, this can cause leaks to freeze and cause breakdown to your boiler which will result in costly repairs.
  • leave your heating on for longer periods of time at lower settings and circulate the heat into your attic by leaving the trap door open or leaving the light on, this will give you the best protection against frozen pipes.
